“I think this really empowers them to identify and to be able to have the courage to speak up, “ says Tijuana Julian, Executive Director of Student Affairs and Dean of Students at Drury University. The university recently released a report from their Blue Ribbon Committee on the Prevention of Hazing. Studies report that more than 70% of students suffer negative consequences after being hazed. The committee, consisting of students, coaches, and administrators met to develop core covenants that let students know how to treat one another. The report will help identify inappropriate behavior and implement change. “We stress, as coaches, working on fundamentals, and working on the aspects of each of our different sports,” says Mark Fisher, Director of Athletics, Drury University, “but I think we also have to build the complete person. I think whether it’s education or the business world, it’s all about treating people in the right fashion.”
